Gram Panchayat Administration and Officials: A Brief

Grama Panchayats are the basic unit of the decentralized administration system in Kerala. For the smooth functioning of a panchayat, the administrative committee comprising the people's representatives and the officials of various departments work hand in hand.

 

1. Administrative Structure

The policy formulation and decisions of the panchayat are taken by the elected representatives. Its structure is as follows:

 

Panchayat Administrative Committee: The main committee comprising the elected ward members and the president.

Steering Committee (Mukhya Samiti): This is the main committee that coordinates the activities of the administrative committee.

Standing Committees (Standing Committees): There are four main committees for various development activities:

Finance Standing Committee: Handles financial matters.

Development Standing Committee: Leads the development of infrastructure.

Welfare Standing Committee: Implements social welfare schemes.

Health and Education Standing Committee: Focuses on health, sanitation and education.
